SNw 038 The future of ERP -- 50 years on Created by James on 6/11/2013 11:46:55 AM This article examines where ERP and Business Information Systems will be in fifty years time
Where do I think that ERP will be in 50 years time?
Here are some thoughts:
1. Most of the mainstream core ERP software products will be around but with further mergers and acquisitions and ERP will be a commodity.
2. A least one international mega-corporate will have been wiped out by a failed ERP Implementation and will take a big brand implementer down with it.
3. Business system configuration and commissioning, previously known as Implementation, will be recognized as a formal engineering discipline and will be strictly regulated as such requiring a four year University Engineering degree and professional registration in order to practice.
4. Robust contracts that protect the interests of clients and associated with tough procurement practices (such as I am offering) will be standard practice.
5. At least one more major implementer will be eliminated through repeated litigation resulting from dishonest practices, negligence and incompetence.
6. At least one major corporate will be dragged down by a "cloud" related system failure that denies them access to the data they need in order to trade at a level that they shut up shop -- a case of "I do not actually know where the data is, I just placed it with the lowest bidder"
7. At least one significant country will have been disciplined by the International Community through denial of service in terms of access to the Internet and such sanctions will be commonplace at smaller scale levels -- corporates and individuals
8. A host of small and highly effective software assembly shops will be giving the mainstream ERP software vendors a serious run for their money by providing sharply focussed custom solutions that exactly meet business requirements for a fraction of the traditional cost of ERP that we are accustomed to today.
